SUMMARY:Greendale, A Planned Community
DESCRIPTION:Daina Penkiunas, presenter for Greendale, A Planned Community, is the Wisconsin Historical Society’s State Historic Preservation Officer.\nJust what is a planned community?  In 1936 the U.S. Department of Agriculture began construction on three new communities, known as Greenbelt Towns, as a part of President Roosevelt’s New Deal. One of them, Greendale, was built in Wisconsin, about three miles southwest of Milwaukee. Built to demonstrate a new kind of suburban living, these towns were built so that housing was situated within easy walking distance of gardens, employment and the town center.\nDaina will give us the full story of beautiful and unique Greendale, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.\nThis presentation is free and open to the public. Second Saturdays is underwritten by the Oostburg State Bank and private donors like Sandy Mahloch. Thank you for your support.\n
